Sciatica is a pain that originates in the low back and radiates through the buttock, pain down the back of the thigh, into the calf, and down to the foot. Numbness, pins and needles sensation, and tingling are also symptoms of sciatica.
Sciatica is usually caused by irritation or compression of the roots of the sciatic nerve, which originate in the lower back region. Common causes of this compression or irritation are spinal mis-alignments, herniated or bulging discs, the added weight of pregnancy on the low back, or a mis-alignment of the hips or pelvis. Most orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons now agree that conservative care, without drugs or surgery, is the best first approach in treating sciatica.
